The Port of Algeciras, once again, has been ranked as the most efficient port on the continent and currently holds the 20th position worldwide. According to data from the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI 2024) by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, in this highly competitive global context, Spain’s leading port continues to improve its efficiency.
This 2024 edition has recorded a total of 403 ports and a total of 175,152 registered calls. In the case of Spain’s main port, the turnaround time for loading and unloading operations has been reduced by 76%.
This excellent performance is due to effective collaboration between the main logistics players in the Andalusian hinterland, such as SAM Algeciras — the multimodal logistics platform of Grupo Alonso’s logistics division — as well as other services and organisations linked to port operations.
Asian dominance versus European
Worldwide, the efficiency rankings are led by ports in East Asia and North Africa, with Yangshan, Fuzhou, and Port Said at the top, followed by Dalian and Tanger-Med.
Despite this global dominance, within the Spanish context, Barcelona ranks sixth with 52.0 points behind Algeciras; followed by Málaga with 27 points and Las Palmas with 22.
Despite the positive efficiency figures, total traffic at the Port of Algeciras has decreased by 5%, and container traffic by 2.6%. In fact, during the first eight months of 2025, Algeciras recorded activity of 67.4 million tonnes, which is 4.9% below the previous year. Regarding container traffic, 3.1 million TEUs were handled, representing a 2.6% decline.
However, with regard to the past month of August, the number of full import and export containers increased by 5.8% compared to the previous year, reaching 1,247 units per day, generating expectations of further growth in the future.
