Maritime connectivity is one of the factors that help ports to be better positioned within the global port network. These positions are based on the connectivity index produced annually by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Some factors that condition the position of each port are the number of ships, the capacity to carry containers, the maximum size of ships, the number of services and the number of companies that incorporate container ships in a country’s ports.
An excellent layout for the Spanish territory, which is reflected in the increase in traffic in recent years. Aware of the potential of the Andalusian region, public and private institutions continue to make improvements to its infrastructures and to create spaces that favour synergies between different modes of transport.
Second best connected Spanish port and fifth in Europe
As a strategic point between the European and African continents, the port of Algeciras has once again consolidated its fifth position achieved in the last quarter of 2021 in Europe. Ahead are the maritime centres of Rotterdam (Holland), Antwerp (Belgium), Hamburg (Germany) and Valencia.
Although the port of Algeciras has climbed positions during the last few years and, at the moment it is one of the best connected ports in Europe and the second in Spain, the reality is that the ports that lead the ranking with the best maritime connectivity are the Asian ones. In this order, Shanghai, Ningbo, Singapore, Busan and Qingdao are the best port centres in the world, according to Port Liner Shipping Connectivity.
