Spanish ports are currently promoting sustainability with projects that minimise their environmental impact. Digitalisation, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies have become key pillars of this transformation. Following this trend, the port of Algeciras is reinforcing its commitment to the environment with the implementation of initiatives that reduce pollution and promote the use of clean technologies.
In its hinterland, SAM Algeciras, a multimodal logistics platform, also reinforces this commitment with an environmental policy based on energy efficiency, the reduction of emissions and the optimisation of resources.
The company, part of the Alonso Group holding company, is certified as a distributor of organic products, which guarantees that the products comply with the highest standards in production, preparation, packaging and sustainable marketing. In addition, SAM Algeciras has incorporated technological advances in its warehouses to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact, thus optimising energy consumption and minimising its carbon footprint.
Through these measures, both the port and its logistics environment are moving towards a more sustainable economic model over time.
Electrification of the docks
The Algeciras enclave continues to consolidate its commitment to the electrification of docks with the implementation of the OPS (Onshore Power Supply) system in the Isla Verde Interior dock. To this end, it has allocated 3.4 million euros to the definition of the implementation project with the aim of connecting ships to the electricity grid while they are docked. An initiative that eliminates the need to use diesel generators.
This development will reduce CO2 emissions, improve air quality and reduce noise pollution. It is also part of the decarbonisation strategy for the maritime sector promoted by the European Union. With an execution period of ten months, this project reinforces the port’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
Spanish ports in favour of sustainability
Spain has a key port network for international trade. In addition to the port of Algeciras, other enclaves are adopting measures to reduce their environmental impact and improve their energy efficiency. For example, the port of Barcelona has set up an external technical sustainability office to coordinate and evaluate the implementation of its Positive Impact Sectoral Sustainability Plan. The aim of this action is to ensure that green strategies are effectively integrated throughout its operations.
For its part, the port of Valencia is moving ahead with an ambitious strategy to become a zero emissions port by 2030. Its projects include the electrification of docks, the installation of solar parks and the promotion of green hydrogen as a source of energy.
These developments reinforce the importance that port activity can continue to be an economic driver without compromising the health of the planet.
