Servicios Auxiliares Marítimos Algeciras (SAM Algeciras) has achieved certification for the storage of organic products in its refrigeration facilities. After almost a year of preparation, the company installed a little more than one kilometer from the Andalusian port, will be able to offer this new service aimed mainly at the food industry and that will help consolidate its global offer. The segment of organic products is increasingly in demand.
SAM Algeciras, the multimodal platform that Alonso Group manages in the hinterland of the port of Algeciras, has taken a further step in its offer of global temperature-controlled storage. The company has achieved certification that allows it to store all types of goods with an ecological seal in its cold stores and has been awarded by the SHC body.
After almost a year of work and an extensive audit, SAM Algeciras is now working with organic products – mainly oils of Spanish origin, fruit and vegetables – in its warehouses. All the organic certificates start as early as the production stage and must follow the entire food chain until it reaches the end consumer.
Now, thanks to this certification, the platform can adapt to the new demands of clients and consumers who are increasingly demanding this type of product which has been treated without additives, without chemical elements and whose production has been environmentally friendly.
Internal traceability protocols
Throughout these months, and in order to prepare for certification, SAM Algeciras has conditioned its facilities to allow for the physical separation of conventional and organic merchandise. In addition, internal protocols have been developed to ensure the traceability of organic foods in order to avoid cross-contamination between this production and traditional production. Finally, identification cards have been designed for all products in order to have greater control over them.
