SAM Algeciras boosts its railway connection to become a strategic perishable goods

17/03/2021Sam Algeciras

The rail route of Servicios Auxiliares Marítimos Algeciras (SAM Algeciras), which will connect the Alonso Group logistics platform with the railway network, continues to progress at a good pace. These works will be added to other advances that the company has recently achieved, such as obtaining the AEO, which position SAM Algeciras as a reference thanks to its intermodal and efficient logistics offer.

SAM Algeciras, the Alonso Group‘s multimodal platform that manages in the hinterland of the port of Algeciras, continues to work steadily on the execution of its future railway connection. In this way, the 120,000 square metres of facilities, 24,000 of which are dedicated to dry storage and 5,200 to refrigerated storage, will increase their added value with a multimodal and efficient service – also from an ecological point of view -, capable of offering a rail connection with Madrid with competitive times.

This ambitious project is part of the Alonso Group’s Global Logistics Plan, which consists of connecting its own logistics platforms with the main hubs of freight traffic on the Iberian Peninsula, by means of highly reliable and frequent multi-client and multi-product trains. A firm commitment to divert road traffic to rail and a clear example of its intermodal vocation. Therefore, this 2021, which the European Commission has called the Year of the Railway with the aim of promoting its use, SAM Algeciras continues to anticipate, by conviction and vocation, a transport that is only responsible for 0.4% of greenhouse gas emissions while the rest of the means of transport represents 25%.

Hub for the agri-food industry
State-of-the-art facilities, next to the main land, rail and sea routes, already allow SAM Algeciras to act as a real international hub for perishable products. Especially in the case of those coming from Central or South America (papayas, pumpkins, avocados, limes, bananas or pineapples) which are subsequently distributed to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula or Europe. At the same time, thanks to its proximity to North Africa, a distance of less than 15 kilometres, it is also acting as a gateway to Europe for fruit and vegetable products from the Maghreb.

A professional and quality service that adds to another of the great advantages of SAM Algeciras: its strategic location. It is located just over a kilometre from the port of Algeciras, one of the most important ports in the southern Mediterranean, with regular connections to the most important ports in the world that handle all types of goods (general, container, project cargo…).

Complet logistics in a strategic location
Its intermodal, competitive and efficient logistics offer is added to other advances that SAM Algeciras has already achieved in recent months. On the one hand, the obtaining of certification as an Authorised Economic Operator (AEOF) in its complete modality that includes the entire logistics platform and all its services (warehouses, cold and dry warehouses, as well as workshops). On the other hand, the achievement of the IFS (International Featured Standards) Logistic for the storage of food products at controlled temperatures and the BIO certification for organic food in refrigerated facilities, which is already being applied to oils of Spanish origin, fruit and vegetables.
